Dear Church family and friends,
You may have noticed a recent marketing strategy online: ‘are you #team1 or #team2?’. It’s not just in product advertisement, but also promotional material for TV programmes – particularly ‘reality TV’ – when there’s been a conflict between two characters. You need to have an opinion and make a decision; one or the other no sitting on the fence. Being part of a team means you are supported, you belong and can blend in if things get messy. Having a label which indicates a decision, however, does not sit so comfortably with us: “oh you’re a xyz”. It’s an accusation, it singles you out, and it can come across as an insult. Particularly the label ‘sheep’ – the fluffy animals that roam around in a flock, providing wool, milk and meat – is meant as someone who follows blindly, never questioning, and quite frankly a bit stupid. There are, however, benefits to being a sheep, as Pastor Lucas explains in his sermon on Matthew 25: 31 – 46: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wlp5Jl4FuTE
